THE BATON ROUGE CONCERT BAND
The Baton Rouge Concert Band (BRCB) is a non-profit community organization
dedicated to the cultural enrichment and entertainment of the Greater Baton Rouge
area. Under the direction of Sheily Bell, Conductor, and Wesley McCoy, Assistant
Conductor, the BRCB is composed of approximately fifty-five local musicians who
volunteer their time and talents to bring delightful musical entertainment to the
community. Our dedicated musicians are a collective group of fine, artistic performers
who come from all walks of life. We are doctors, lawyers, music teachers, educators,
journalists, accountants, chemists, engineers, technicians, retired citizens, college
students, homemakers, and many others.
Formed in June, 1977 by Vernon Taranto, the Band has been providing entertainment
to the community and surrounding areas for over 29 years. Mr. Taranto retired in 2002
after 50 years of conducting, including 25 years with the BRCB. Since its formation, the
BRCB has performed over 250 public concerts, including our annual Memorial Day,
Fourth of July, Labor Day, and Christmas concerts. The Band has played at various
locations throughout the city, including the State Capitol, Baton Rouge Zoo, LSU Union
Theater, Centroplex Performing Arts Theatre, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Bon Marche
Mall, Downtown Fest-For-All, Cortana Mall, Catfish Town, Mississippi River Levee,
First Baptist Church, Broadmoor and Tara High Schools, to name just a few, and has
provided entertainment for various community organizations and functions, including
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, St. Aloysius Catholic Church, USS Kidd, Old State
Capital Restoration, Baker Heritage Museum, McHugh House Museum in Zachary,
Kiwanis Taste of Baton Rouge and Louisiana State University Annual Tree-Lighting
Ceremony.
The BRCB was invited, and participated in, the annual Holiday in Dixie Festival in
Shreveport, Louisiana in April of 1990, the Association of Concert Bands Conference in
Plano, Texas, in April of 1992, in Gainesville, Florida, in April of 1995 and in Lafayette,
Louisiana, in April of 1997. On Columbus Day, 1992, at the unveiling of the Columbus
statue, the Band presented a special composition entitled "The Voyage of Christopher
Columbus", commissioned by the Band in honor of the 500th anniversary of the
discovery of America.
The Band has performed for the opening ceremonies of the 1993 Senior Olympics at L.
S.U.; the dinner in honor of former Mayor Woody W. Dumas, and the dedication of the
golf course in his name; and the 1993 inauguration of the Mayor of Baton Rouge and
the City Council. The Band participated in the ceremonies for the dedication of the
statue of Martin Luther King, Jr., and has also participated in various veterans’
ceremonies, including the Lighting of the Eternal Flame and the dedication of the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial at the U.S.S. Kidd Museum.
In the aftermath of the tragedy in New York and Washington in 2001, the Band
received many requests to perform at memorial services. In addition to its many
activities as a full band, smaller ensembles of from 12 to 36 pieces are frequently asked
to perform at various functions and events throughout South Louisiana. In March 2006,
the BRCB recorded their first recording since the 1980’s titled “The Baton Rouge
Concert Band presents The Sound of American Music. The CD was released at their
Labor Day concert in September.
The Band performed at the annual Association of Concert Bands (ACB) Convention in
Pensacola, Florida, in March, 2007, and recently hosted the United States Coast Guard
